  • Columbus Weekend in Franconia, NH

Just arrived at Fransted Campground for the weekend. The early morning fog lifted after offering some gorgeous sights over Profile and Echo Lakes. It appears we’ve lucked out, despite the summer drought the leaves are full of chromatic bliss. I’m guessing this is near the peak of leaf-peeping, a short window of majestic beauty in the White Mountains.More importantly, the kids are excited to be in the mountains for an end of season family camping trip.

    Let the weekend begin!

  • Video Production Trade News – Week of September 4, 2016

Each week I share select trade news articles with students enrolled in my New England Tech video production classes. It’s critical in any field to remain current, follow emerging trends, examine best practices, and learn about various challenges that face the industry.

Below are some articles from the past week that were discussed during class:

    1. HLN Editors Blur Trump Shirt

Last week CNN’s sister network, HLN was criticised for blurring Steven Eckel’s 2016 Trump T-Shirt during a televised interview. The 53 retired New Jersey police officer was interviewed by HLN after Mr. Eckel used a sledgehammer to break the glass of a car parked in the summer heat with a young child inside.

During the original live interview, Mr. Eckel’s shirt was unaltered, NO blur, but subsequent replays of the interview masked the Trump 2016 shirt with a blur and b-roll footage was used to apparently, limit Mr. Eckel’s shirt on-the-air.

According to the Washington Post, HLN(formerly Headline News) later released a statement, “We blurred the logo and shouldn’t have; it was done in error…”

    Ampex VR-1000 Advertisement 1956 – Broadcasting-Telecasting, October 15, 1956

The Ampex VR-1000 was a game-changing technology of its time. The First demonstration was on April 14, 1956 at the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters Convention (known today as NAB). Keep in mind before the release of the VR-1000 film was the only viable recording medium available to the TV industry.

For some of the same reasons Hollywood recently shifted to “digital cinema”, TV broadcasters in 1956 saw an opportunity to cut cost and improve their efficiency. Recording east coast broadcasts and having them ready for rebroadcast on the West Coast just hours later was difficult and expensive. This was one of the driving factors to take advantage of Ampex’s new development. Eliminating film processing and development time:

By 1954, the networks used more raw film stock for kinescopes than all of the Hollywood film studios combined, spending up to $4,000 per half hour. – Wikipedia

  • NASA to Launch UHD Channel November 1st

NASA is partnering with Harmonic, a worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, to launch NASA TV UHD, the first ever non-commercial consumer ultra-high definition (UHD) channel in North America. The partnership is the result of a Space Act Agreement between Harmonic and the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Using an end-to-end UHD video delivery system from Harmonic, NASA Television will have the capability to deliver linear 2160p60 video content, allowing viewers to enjoy footage on a wide range of television and internet-connected devices. The new UHD channel is expected to launch on Nov. 1, following preliminary tests.“

Partnering with Harmonic gives NASA an outlet for its UHD content, which has four times the resolution of HD and is the next iteration of digital television,” said Robert Jacobs, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Office of Communications at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.

Leveraging the 8-megapixel resolution of UHD, the channel will showcase the breathtaking beauty and grandeur of space. NASA TV UHD video will be sourced from high-resolution images and video generated on the International Space Station and other current NASA missions, as well as re-mastered footage from historical missions.

Harmonic currently is in discussions with pay TV operators to carry the channel on the satellite, cable and optical networks for consumer access. The channel also will stream on the Internet, which will require at least 13 MBps access connectivity to receive the signal and enjoy the UHD experience.

“As NASA reaches new heights and reveals the unknown, the NASA TV UHD channel can bring that journey to life in every home. And as organizations at the forefront of innovation, together we are leading the adoption of this exciting technology,” said Peter Alexander, chief marketing officer at Harmonic. “As the leader in UHD development, Harmonic provides a complete solution for Ultra HD video production and delivery, enabling content and service providers to offer better video quality at a low total cost of ownership.”

  • HeadsetGate Is Not a Conspiracy, Explained

Last Thursday night (September 10, 2015) the Patriots opened their season at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. During the first quarter the Steelers coaching staff reported problems with their headsets. “Patriots Radio” bleeding was impeding their communications.

In the wake of deflate gate this “technical problem” stirred up instant conspiracy theories and pointed questions directed at the Patriot organization.

For the geeks out there, the ones willing to understand, listen to logic and reason, you need to check out this blog post from Alex Milne. The blog post is a bit long, but offers an in-depth explanation of what most likely happened, from a technical perspective.

    Some possible explanations

A poorly grounded audio or power cable in the wired portion of the intercom system that lives in the coaches’ booth, and connects to the wireless cart on the field, acted as an antenna (anything made from metal can be an antenna), and picked up The Sports Hub radio network.

  • Sunspots at Franconia Notch’s Flume Gorge

    Telescope View of the Sun
Telescope View of the Sun demonstration at Franconia Notch Flume Gorge & Visitor Center

Day two of our summer vacation to the White Mountains. We had a rough start, the hike we planned was abruptly canceled due to a closed trail. We struggled a bit to regroup and find a new hike. We ended up opting for an easy hike down the familiar Pemi Trail and Bike Path with no specific destination.

We ended up at the Flume Gorge and walked around the visitor center, checked the trout pond, and happened upon two students from Dartmouth College who were working with the Appalachian Mountain Club Astronomy Programs. They had several telescopes setup just outside the entrance and offered some great information.

Astronomy Programs at AMCWe learned how to view the sun with various telescope techniques. There were two visible sunspots during our observation, which may be hard to see in the photo because they appeared as specks. In fact I thought they were just dust or dirt on the lens. Those specks are actually about the size of earth.

Our two boys really enjoyed the demonstration and information. I was not aware of the Astronomy Programs at AMC, but I our family can take advantage of more programs like this. We understand that telescopes will be available at Lafayette Campground for night observing during June-August. We are here for the next two weeks, so we hope to make it on a nice clear night.
